Hendzel + Hunt 24 hour design challenge.
On May 6th 2011 Hendzel + Hunt held their first ever “24hr Design Challenge”. Based on an experimental approach to their MADE IN PECKHAM range.

5 teams produced 5 machines, from the top clockwise:
“The French Orchestra” by Oscar Hunt, Jade Folawiyo & Chris Glaister
“The Duchess of Peckham” by Ben Tyers, Nic Parnell, Nathan Johnson, Martin Price
“The Portable One” by Daniel Wallis, Tim Harris, Mike Kann, Carson Leong
“It’s Bin A Long Time” by Roger Arquer, Jan Hendzel, William Hassett
“The Singer” by Stanzin Losal, Marta Bakowski, Philip Brauchle, Jay Lanaghan
“The French Orchestra”

Produced by Oscar Hunt - Designer & Maker, Jade Folawiyo - Product Designer & Chris Glaister - Product Designer & Engineer, "The French Orchestra" was Inspired by the idea of challenging the way in which a gramophone is traditionally viewed, taking it from the table to the wall. A weighted paint pot provides the motion via pullies that turn the record. This mechanism composed of a wheel on an axle is exposed as the focal point of the piece.

An element of performance is created with the motion of the record spinning as the pulley system is wound up and the audience watches the weight travel from the height of the piece down to the ground whilst the gramophone plays out its tune.
Charcole Coolbox // A Coolbox for the Developing World
Winner of the 2003 British Standards Institute Sustainability in Design Competition, the Charcole Concrete cool box was devloped as a cheap and robust cooler working on the age old principle of evaporation of water. The potentail to use the charcole based concrete as a water filtration device was also investigated. Designed and built in colaboration with Martin Yong.

Chonos Chomos Concrete // Colour Changing Concrete
Project Team: Afshin Mehin, Chris Glaister and Thomas Rosen
Chronos Chromos Concrete is a system able to dynamically display patterns, numbers and text in concrete surfaces. Applications span products for the home through to large scale architectural installations.
Winner of the Cement Creativity Awards 2003, the project was subsequently taken on by Innovation RCA, based at the Royal College of Art in London, for further development.
Subsequently, Tomas Heatherwick chose a one off piece for his Conran Foundation Collection at the Design Museum, London, in 2004 where it was displayed amongst a thousand other "ingenious inventions" which had caught his eye.
In 2005, a proposal for an interactive public square won 1st prise in the Robustness in Design Competition coming in ahead of many international entrants.

Pimms Chariot // Mobile Musical Pimms Bar
Designed by the bride and groom, the Pimms Chariot was built, fitted with a sound system and stocked with jugs of Pimms on the lawn before dinner.

AIR // ECO Home Ventilation System for B&Q
Client: B&Q
Position: Research Associate, Helen Hamlyn Research Centre, Royal College of Art, London.
I joined Duncan Turner at the Helen Hamlyn Research Centre to aid him with the development of a new domestic ventilation concept intended to provide a flow of clean fresh air through a home producing a cooling effect throughout the summer and dispersing stuffy warm air though the winter.
In addition the system had a pollen filter for those who suffer from hay fever and a boost function for odour removal.

O2 Technology in Textiles // Barcode Clothing
Project Team: Chris Glaister and Michelle Shakallis
Winner of the 2004 O2 Technology in Textiles Competition.
Working with textiles designer Michelle Shakallis, we developed technology to allow ring tones to be read with a camera phone directly from barcode prints on garments. The concept was aimed at bringing customers into O2's high street stores by realising a ring tone as a tangible product.
